Toshiba to end mobile phone production in Japan

TOKYO (AFP) -

Japanese electronics giant Toshiba Corp. said Wednesday that it would stop making mobile telephones in Japan as part of efforts to recover from its biggest ever loss.

Toshiba will end production of mobile phones at its Hino plant in western Tokyo in September and outsource the manufacturing to overseas firms.

"As the result, we will finish our production of mobile phones in Japan although product development and design will continue at our Hino plant," said Toshiba spokesman Keisuke Omori.

"It's part of our effort to reduce fixed costs and achieve profit as we are facing a tough period," Omori said, adding that it had no plan to cut any jobs as a result of the move.

Toshiba logged a record loss of 343.6 billion yen (3.6 billion dollars) in the year to March, hit by weak demand and a stronger yen.

It suffered losses on its mobile phone business for the first time in five years, as sales halved from the previous year to some three million units.

The Hino plant initially opened in 1964 to produce telecommunications products and shifted its output to mobile phones in the mid-1980s.

Toshiba will continue producing mobile phones at its Chinese plant. The spokesman declined to say which companies would receive the outsourcing work.

Nokia 6708 Mobile Phone

By Monty Alexander

When it comes to mobile phones, no one does it like Nokia. Sony Ericsson does it once with Cybershot, Motorola does it once with Razr, BlackBerry, O2, Dopod, all have an ace product to keep their names shining but Nokia does it time and again, almost every time. Nokia phones are more than what you expect them to be and most often deliver high on usage and functionality too. Here's 6708.

Looks

Look wise the Nokia 6708 isn't wow impressive. It has a cold steel exterior and that's about it. A little jazz could have done it good. The feature rich power packed phone has a weight that justifies the add-ons. At 150 gms the phone can be a little bulky on your pocket. The screen does not have scratch resistance surprisingly so you might need to buy some thing to protect the screen. The keypad just has number on it and for any other function one need to use the touch screen. Not bad but for menial tasks it gets a little irritating to use the touch screen

Key features

The Nokia 6708 scores A grade on all accounts a smart phone, PDA and a multi-media piece. The impressive 2.6 inch display is a touch screen with bright high- screen resolution (208 x320), and a color Active Matrix TFT display of (65,536). This gives an enriching experience to your videos and games. With its lion batteries the phone has an impressive 6 hours talk-time and 275 hours of standby time not letting you down even if you are high on your multimedia usage. 6708 is the first Nokia mobile phone to run on the versatile OS v 7.0 operating system with UIQ interface. The mobile phone supports POP3, MAP4, SMTP e-mail protocol, and a pre-installed Quick Office and MSN Mobile Messenger along with GPRS, Bluetooth, infrared, internet browsing via its WAP 2.0/xHTML browser and a mini USB 1.1 for PC synchronization to keep you seamlessly connected and equipped even when you are away from your desktop. The built-in memory is 18 MB but a MicroSD card would easily compliment it and live up to your storage needs. You can create, edit and send multi-media messages with audio clips and videos by this nokia mobile. The camera is a disappointment at 1.3 MP.

The navigation is user friendly and there are very grim chances that you might get lost while locating a function or feature. With its functionality above average on most counts, the jack of all trades can be a good phone if you can do away with the bling.

Monty Alexander has written many articles on many mobiles - Sony Ericsson mobile, Nokia mobile, HTC mobile etc.
